A lot of hope when the X-Men: Dark Phoenix project was announced a few years ago. This film is the ending of the X-Men franchise series that began Fox studio 20 years ago. Unfortunately, the results were not as high as many people expected.
This 114-minute film feels very flat. In fact, the moment of conclusion should be an emotional point, walking flat and there is no big emotion in it. In fact, this Dark Phoenix story is actually good in the comic version.
Dark Phoenix tells the story of Jean Gray (Sophie Turner) who was hit by a cosmic force attack, Phoenix Force, while carrying out a mission with X-Men to space. That power penetrated Jean's body and made him very strong. Not for good, that power actually affected Jean to do damage. In fact, Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) also had difficulty controlling Jean. Jean's destructive action enters a new round after Mystique / Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) is killed in his hand.
Raven's death makes Beast (Nicholas Hoult) inflamed. He blames Charles for what happened to X-Men, Jean and Raven. He then goes to meet Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and asks for help to find Jean. Magneto who heard the news of Raven's death from the Beast became angry. He was determined to kill Jean. Hunting begins. Magneto and his men allied with the Beast tried to find Jean to kill him, while Professor X with the Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) wanted to save Jean.
On the other hand, Jean met Smith (Jessica Chastain), a mysterious woman who turned out to be the incarnation of extraterrestrials that could change shape. Smith tried to influence Jean to seize the Phoenix power from inside him. Smith and his men came to Earth to hunt Phoenix with the aim of using that power to kill humanity on Earth.
The presence of aliens who later changed shape as humans will remind Skrull who appears in Captain Marvel. Although Dark Phoenix does not mention the word Skrull and the alien form is different from the one in Captain Marvel, but Marvel comic fans must have guessed that the aliens in Dark Phoenix are Skrull. The difference is, if Skrull in Captain Marvel is good, then in Dark Phoenix, Skrull is described as an evil alien. This resemblance seems to be the reason for director Simon Kinberg to re-shoot this film. Apart from the reason for the ending that is almost similar to Captain Marvel if it happens in space.
In addition, Dark Phoenix should be an emotional conclusion for the 20-year X-Men franchise journey on Fox. Unfortunately, less emotion is obtained from this film. Even though this film — actually — the story is very sad because it explores Jean's tragic background and past, however, the emotional effects of explosions do not arise. In fact, Mystique's death seemed normal. For some reason. The emotional explosion that should have been in Jean and Cyclops's relationship felt bland. In fact, their chemistry is not too strong as a lover in a film which then forces them to separate because of the influence of Phoenix's strength in Jean.
Even so, one of the interesting things in this film is the character Charles Xavier. As the actor, James McAvoy, once said, he felt that Charles was actually an evil character in Dark Phoenix. This saying is not excessive. In this film, Charles does indeed have a great ego and ambition that makes him look evil. When Mystique warned him about his ego, Charles arrogantly ignored him. He hid behind the shield that what he did was for good. When Mystique died, Charles still did not want to admit that he had made a mistake behind the death.
Dark Phoenix explores the other side of Charles's character, who has been known to be polite and kind. Here, Charles is described as an ambitious figure that justifies any means so that he can be respected, respected and still have influence. However, in the end, Charles could admit his mistake, even though it was very difficult for him to apologize.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is definitely not the best X-Men film, but also not the worst. In terms of stories, this film offers fun. Unfortunately, the execution did not answer the expectations of the audience. The film runs flat, without emotion and also the chemistry that the players don't fully have.
